There are two types of Homunculus in the Ys series. Fairy-like artificial beings and alchemy-made humans.
Fairy-like artificial beings
This type of homunculus appears in Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, Ys SEVEN and Ys: Memories of Celceta. They are fairy-like, miniaturized artificial beings. There's little reference to how they are made except Crevia who said she was created by Alma. The rest of the homunculi are accompanied by the Clan of Darkness members such as Ernst and Frieda.

This type appears in Ys IX: Monstrum Nox. They are humans created through alchemy. All known homunculi of this type are created by Zola. The most stable homunculi of this type are those that are created as babies, and raised up as normal humans. Those that are created as adult clones are less stable, and will disintegrate after withstanding certain amount of damage.

Trivia
- The concept of homunculus as clones of the living was first introduced in the non-canon PS2 remake of Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand, which was developed by Access. Ys IX: Monstrum Nox incorporated it as part of official canon lore. A similar example would be General Leo, who first appeared in the non-canon Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys but later became an official character in Ys: Memories of Celceta.
