Damage Type symbols from Ys IX: Monstrum Nox.

Damage Types (攻撃属性 (こうげき ぞくせい) , lit. Attack Attribute?), or Attack Types, are a game mechanic introduced in Ys SEVEN, similar to the Three weapons mechanic. Party members are divided into one of the three types depending on their weapons.

Appearances

Ys SEVEN

The damage types of each character are fixed, with the exception of Adol, who can change his damage type by equipping different weapons. While he starts with only Slash-type weapons, he can also obtain Pierce and Strike weapons over the course of the game. His final weapon, Caliocerion, is the only All-type weapon in the game.

Different combinations of party members and their damage types will grant you Party Typing Bonuses:

Types

Slash ( (ざん) ?) is the damage type given to characters that use a weapon with a blade. Their attacks are more effective against enemies with soft bodies.

Strike ( () ?) is the damage type given to characters that use an impact weapon like a hammer. Their attacks are more effective against enemies with a hard shell.

Pierce ( (しゃ) ?) is the damage type given to characters that use a weapon with a sharp tip like a rapier or a bow and arrow. Their attacks are more effective against flying enemies.

All is the type given to characters or weapons that have all three types. It appears in Ys SEVEN as a weapon for Adol, and in Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana and Ys IX: Monstrum Nox as accessories the can be equipped for any character.

Breaking tutorial from Ys VIII.

Break (ブレイク?), while not a regular damage type, it revolves around hitting enemies with an attack of their type of weakness, causing them to enter a Break Status. When in Break Status, the enemy becomes weak against all three damage types. Additionally, Break Status can make monsters drop rare items, drop flying enemies, among other bonuses. It was introduced in Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana and returns in Ys IX: Monstrum Nox.
